First Butoh Exhibition in Vietnam
As a project to introduce the appeal of Butoh, a unique Japanese physical expression, following the BUTOH Months held online in 2021, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a BUTOH exhibition, workshops and performance series, titled “Butoh, A Physical Expression Spreading from Japan to the World” curated by MATSUOKA Dai (Butoh dancer) and KUREMIYA Yurika (Dance researcher) from 11 October to 03 November 2024 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city.

Butoh is an art form of physical expression that originated in Japan in 1959. Butoh, with its novel visuals and unique rhetoric that were far away from the stylistic movements of Western dance, attracted many intellectuals and artists of the time, and various butoh troupes sprang up to form a movement with overwhelming enthusiasm. Many butoh dancers have continued to spread the appeal of butoh throughout the world to this day.

This is the first exhibition on Butoh in Vietnam. We would like to provide an opportunity for many Vietnamese people to learn about this Japanese contemporary dance, “How and when was Butoh born?” “How has it spread to the present day?” by exhibiting many photos, posters, and various videos.

As side events of the exhibition, a Butoh performance by the renown Butoh dancer MATSUOKA Dai will be conducted at the opening of the exhibition in Hanoi, along with 2 workshops in Ho Chi Minh City and 1 in Hanoi. Admission is free, but advance registration is required for the workshops.
