The 9th Biennial International Conference of The Japanese Studies Association of Southeast Asia (JSA-ASEAN) is scheduled to take place in Laos on December 11-12, 2025. This conference showcases the newest partner of JSA-ASEAN, National University of Laos, under the Gender Studies Center, Faculty of Social Science. The conference theme is “Gender Perspectives for Southeast Asia and Japan: Pasts and Futures,” and it will include keynote and plenary addresses, as well as a workshop for graduate students. The event also commemorates the 70th anniversary of Laos – Japan diplomatic relations.

The Japan Foundation is pleased to announce a Travel Support Program to assist Vietnamese scholars attending the conference.  

1. Eligibility 

Applicants shall fulfill all the followings:  

(1) Scholars with Vietnamese nationality 

(2) Scholars whose panel/paper proposal has been JSA-ASEAN in Laos 2025 committee 

 

2. Items to be Provided 

(1) Conference registration fee; 

(2) Airfare for a round trip between the nearest airport from ones residence and Wattay Airport. The Japan Foundation only covers cost for discount-economy tickets less than USD 500.00. Exceeding amount shall be borne by awardees; 

(3) Accommodation will be supported up to USD 80 per night, for a maximum of three nights (check-in on December 10 and check-out on December 13).
Any amount exceeding USD 80 per night shall be borne by the awardees. 

 

3. Basic Terms and Conditions: 

(1) Grantees are required to arrive a day before the conference starts and leave a day after the conference ends to/from Vientiane area to cover the whole duration of conference; 

(2) If grantees decided not to attend the conference after they submit the “Acceptance form”, the Japan Foundation may ask you for refund of costs that the Japan Foundation bore for the awardees; 

(3) Grantees must submit a final report; 

(4) This travel support shall be provided on a reimbursement basis.
Awardees are required to first cover the cost of airfare, accommodation, and conference registration by themselves and submit relevant proof of expenses after the conference. The following supporting documents must be attached to the reimbursement claim: 

– Official receipt or invoice for the conference registration fee; 

– Boarding passes (both outbound and return); 

– Hotel receipts showing dates of stay and payment details.  

(5) Grantees must obtain necessary visa for entry if necessary, and bear the cost; 

(6) This travel support provides financial assistance but does not cover the whole     cost of travel. Items not covered in the above “4. Items to be Provided” and/or amount exceeding the limit must be borne by the Awardee. Also, the Japan Foundation strongly recommends the awardees to acquire travel insurance by themselves; 

(7) Awardees agree that the photos taken by the Japan Foundation may be used for its publication and/or web media.
