The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in Asia and the study of Asia. With approximately 6,500 members worldwide, representing all regions and disciplines related to Asia, the AAS is the largest organization of its kind.

The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) 2026 Annual Conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada, from March 12 – 15, 2026.
The Japan Foundation is pleased to announce a Travel Support Program to assist young and emerging scholars from Southeast Asia in attending the conference.
- Objectives
- To support academic career development of scholars in the field of Japanese Studies in Southeast Asia.
- To encourage cross-border and cross-disciplinary academic exchange.
- Eligibility
- Scholars holding nationality of Southeast Asian countries, or affiliated with an institution of Japanese Studies in Southeast Asia.
- Master’s degree holders (or Master’s course students intending to pursue doctoral study).
- Applicants whose presentation proposals have been accepted by the AAS 2026 Annual Conference selection committee.
- Able to participate in the full duration of the conference (March 12–15, 2026; arrival on March 11 and departure on March 16).
- English communication ability is desirable.
- Priority
- Young scholars, or those who contribute to the development of young scholars.
- Applicants conducting research that bridges Southeast Asian/Asian Studies and Japanese Studies.
- Applicants who do not have other sources of funding.
- Support Provided
- Conference registration fee.
- Round-trip airfare (up to USD 1,500, economy class).
- Accommodation for 5 nights (Check-in: March 11, Check-out: March 16, 2026).
