Dear partners and friends,
I am honored to return to the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam as Director. Previously, I served as Deputy Director of the Center from 2010 to 2014.
Over the past decade, the world has developed rapidly, and 10 years away makes me feel like a newcomer here in Vietnam. To reintegrate into the community, I recognize the need to reacquaint myself with the Vietnamese language, as well as the country’s rich culture and evolving arts scene.
During my time away, I have observed remarkable shifts in Vietnam’s contemporary culture and social landscape, which are vividly expressed through the numerous works of talented artists, creators, and scholars. I am eager to immerse myself in the many performances, exhibitions, film screenings, discussions, and symposiums that take place here. Through these experiences, I aim to deepen my understanding of modern Vietnamese sensibilities and social issues while also contributing by sharing Japan’s innovative ideas and cultural expressions with our Vietnamese friends and partners.
In addition to cultural exchange, I look forward to advancing Japanese language education and Japanese studies in Vietnam. Over the last ten years, the number of Vietnamese students, professionals, and experts in Japan has increased significantly. Together with specialists in Japanese language education, Japanese studies, and the Nihongo Partners program, we are committed to working closely with relevant institutions to provide effective support for all those interested in learning and teaching Japanese, as well as studying Japan.
Lastly, the world is facing a multitude of pressing global challenges, such as climate change, disaster management, and aging populations, which call for international collaboration beyond national interests. At the Japan Foundation, we are eager to contribute to addressing these critical issues through interdisciplinary research and cultural initiatives. By building strong networks and partnering with individuals, governments, international organizations, private, and non-profit organizations from Japan, Vietnam and beyond, we aim to create meaningful solutions.
I look forward to meeting with our Vietnamese partners and friends soon to further enhance our bilateral and regional cooperation in the cultural sphere.
