Lecture #11:
“JAPANESE FOOD CULTURE: TRADITION AND CHANGE”
Speaker: Doctor Hoang Minh Loi
Former director of Center for Research on Common Issues of Northeast Asia, Institute for Northeast Asian Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
On May 19th 2024, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly organize a lecture on “Japanese food culture: Tradition and change” by Doctor Hoang Minh Loi from Institute for Northeast Asian Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. This lecture is a part of the mini lecture series “Close-up Japan”.
Throughout history, what and how the Japanese people have eaten, and how has Japan faced the changes that sometimes inevitably occur in the process of economic development, cultural exchange and following the flow of time without losing the traditional soul? We hope this lecture will give you a more comprehensive view of Japanese food culture with two main elements: tradition and change.
Coming to the lecture, you will learn about traditional Japanese culinary culture, thereby seeing the relationship between humans and nature, and between people expressed through elements such as ingredients, preparation methods, diet, rituals, customs, related practices, variations… Of course, traditional elements of cuisine are always a top priority in learning about them, but we must not underestimate the changes (good or bad) over the time because all of these things are always associated with the socio-cultural development of a nation.
