“Japanese doll” has been a familiar image that has existed throughout Japan’s history, and is a special cultural element of Japan. In Japan, dolls are believed to represent luck, peace and happiness.
Traditional Japanese dolls come in various colors and styles, and they are classified into many kinds for different social purposes. Each doll is a piece of art which is full of emotion and intelligence, expressing the artisan’s outlook on life and the world. The artisans have breathed life into the work via many different stages, with their ingenuity and meticulousness, to create a unique beauty for each doll. Therefore, each of these dolls has high artistic and creative value.
This exhibition in Hội An will display 29 traditional dolls, from dolls in gorgeous costumes, to simple Kokeshi wooden dolls conveying the pure beauty of wood. This collection not only exudes an outstanding aspect of Japanese culture but also demonstrates a nation’s spiritual beauty and essence.

Following the creation and launch of the project “From Tradition to Tradition” in Hanoi in 2020, the project has developed and launched numerous exhibitions over the last three years as a result of extensive research and interaction with Hang Trong paintings. Traditional Vietnamese painting materials such as silk, lacquer, and Dó paper have been incorporated into Hang Trong paintings to create new traditions that reflect the image and spirit of the younger generation in the new era.
The project “Dialogue with Ukiyo-e paintings” aims to continue the dialogue with traditional Japanese art, particularly the Japanese woodblock prints Ukiyo-e. This painting tradition embodies the quintessential values of Japanese creativity and spirit.
With the creativity of the somewhat rustic and simple artisans in artist Le Dinh Nghien’s Hang Trong paintings, this project has accelerated its progress when transitioning to a genre of sophisticated wood carvings that are a synthesis of the painters’ skills and minds, as well as the artisans of wood engraving, printing, and mounting processes. The project intends to expand its scope by encouraging cross-cultural and cross-national dialogues.
