Furoshiki is a square piece of cloth, used for various purposes such as wrapping and carrying items of different shapes. Dyed in various colors and pattern, these days it is also used for wrapping gifts, and as well as for table coverings or other interior decoration.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam announces the organization of Lecture and Workshop on Furoshiki from March 9th – 10th, 2010 in Hanoi, in collaboration with the Vietnam University of Fine Arts and the Japan Furoshiki Study Froup (Furoshiki Kenkyu Kai)

This cultural event aims at introducing the unique art of using furoshiki to Japanese art and culture lovers in Vietnam, as well as making an appeal to people’s awareness of environmental conservation and their response to a lifestyle based on the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), as the reusable furoshiki will help to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags and thus contribute to saving resources and energy.

Ms. Hiroko HANDA, who as one of core member of the Furoshiki Study Group and its instructor, has been actively engaged with workshops on furoshiki for children and public, will explain on the history and development of furoshiki as well as demonstrate its innovative use to the audience of lectures. The program promises to bring surprises and excitement to the audience, and also to have a chance to make the participants enjoy their practice of furoshiki in the workshops.
