The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents its second act of the JF Garage Concert, “J-Electronic feat. Vietnamese Jew’s harp & zither” by Tri Minh (DJ), Sebastien Gesell (DJ), Duc Minh (Jew’s harps) and Tra My (Vietnamese zither) in Hanoi on Friday 19 October 2012.
In this premier concert, modernity meets Vietnamese tradition. Tri Minh, one of the best electronic music solo artists in Vietnam, will collaborate with two Vietnamese traditional musicians, Duc Minh on Jew’s harps (Dan moi) and Tra My on Vietnamese zither (Dan tranh).
Duc Minh, a member of international society of Jew’s harp, is an enthusiastic composer/researcher on Jew’s harps in Vietnam. Studying Jew’s harps (or Dan moi in Vietnamese) under the highly revered musician/ethnomusicologist, Mr. Tran Quang Hai, Duc Minh became one of the pioneers to bring minority music to Vietnamese and international audience. This is his first-ever act to play with electronic music.
Tra My, a lecturer of Vietnam National Academy of Music and a member of Vietnam Traditional Orchestra, is the master of Vietnamese zither (or Dan tranh in Vietnamese). Earning a plethora of medals in contests and festivals, Tra My has been actively participating in various international orchestras and troupes by honorable invitations.
The catalyst to connect these traditional music masters into electronic music is a multi-talented musician, Tri Minh. Equipped with the degree of musical composition at Hanoi Conservatory of Music, Tri Minh started his career as a Jazz musician but explored his territory in experimental and electronic music, and consequently became one of the most acclaimed electronic musicians in Vietnam. His flexibility and open-minded approach for creation attracts a lot of international and domestic musicians in various genres to collaborate with him, and collaborators enjoy all the time the sublimated fruits with him and the audience.
The concert will be kicked off with the sounds of Jew’s harp, introducing a minority song as well as a Duc Minh’s original song, followed by fusion of Jew’s harp and electronic music. Then the program focuses on Tra My’s excellent Vietnamese zither, starting with the Japanese famous song, Sakura [Cherry Blossoms], followed by the collaboration with Tri Minh, and goes to the climax of the concert, fusion of the all three musicians.
Another climax we cannot miss is a DJ live by Sebastien Gesell, a bilingual of French and Japanese. After being warmed up by stimulating music collaboration, you will be treated with the best of Japanese electronic tunes shuffled by Sebastien in the latter half of the concert.
We do hope our JF Garage Concert 02 will be a good showcase of another challenging fusion of modernity and tradition, as well as a good introduction of diversity in Japanese electronic music.
Free of admission. The concert starts at 8pm on Friday 19 October in the courtyard (Open Stage) of the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). All free seats, first-come, first-served.
