BOOK LAUNCH AND DISCUSSION EVENT: “THE BRIDEGROOM WAS A DOG” WITH AUTHOR YOKO TAWADA

“The Bridegroom Was a Dog” (Inu muko iri), supported under the Japan Foundation’s Translation and Publication Program for the fiscal year 2024, has been officially published in Vietnam. This acclaimed work, written by Yoko Tawada and awarded the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1993, is now published in Vietnamese by Vietnam Women’s Publishing House and distributed nationwide.

To celebrate the book release, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Women’s Publishing House, is honored to organize a special book launch and discussion on November 23rd. This event will feature author Yoko Tawada (joining via Zoom) and esteemed Vietnamese literary scholars.

SPEAKER INFORMATION

Yoko Tawada (Author): After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Russian Literature, she moved to Hamburg, Germany. In 1990, she earned a Master’s degree in German Literature from the University of Hamburg, and in 2000, a Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Zurich. She has received several prestigious awards throughout her literary career, including the Gunzo Prize for her debut work “Kakato wo nakushite” (Losing One’s Heel) in 1991. She was awarded the esteemed Akutagawa Prize in 1993 for The Bridegroom Was a Dog. In 2003, she won the Tanizaki Prize for The Suspect on the Night Train, and in 2018, she received the National Book Award in the category of Translated Literature. In Germany, she was awarded the Chamisso Prize in 1996, the Goethe Medal in 2005, the Kleist Prize in 2016, and the Carl Zuckmayer Medal two years later for her contributions to the German language in her writing.

Nhật Chiêu (Literary researcher): Born in 1951 in Saigon. He is a well-respected writer, educator, translator, and scholar. He is a member of the Translation Criticism and Theory Council, the Vietnam Writers’ Association, HCMC Branch, for the 7th term. His professional reputation is affirmed through several valuable works, including Japanese Literature (a scholarly work), Three Thousand Fragrant Worlds (a scholarly work), Masterpieces of World Literature (co-authored), Basho and Haiku Poetry (a scholarly work), Japan in the Looking Glass (a scholarly work), and Introduction to Eastern Culture (co-authored).

Nguyễn Thị Ái Tiên (Book Translator): Ph.D. in Japanese Language and Culture from Osaka University. She currently lives and works in Japan, teaching at several Japanese universities. She has translated a variety of books in multiple genres. Regarding Yoko Tawada’s works, she has translated The Sacred Tree (co-translated).

Hồ Khánh Vân (MC): Ph.D. in Literature, Deputy Chair of the Department of Literature, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Danang, Vietnam. She specializes in gender, women’s rights in literature and cinema (with a focus on East Asia and Southeast Asia), ecological issues, and landscapes in literature and cinema, as well as works by female authors. She has extensive experience in researching and presenting papers on gender, women’s rights, and ecological landscapes in literature and cinema at international and domestic conferences.

1. As the event will be held within the Japanese Consulate in HCMC, please complete the registration form and bring your ID card (digital ID is accepted) for security clearance.
2. Parking is not available on-site, please arrange your parking in advance.
3. Photography is not allowed, except in designated areas.
4. Food and beverages are not allowed in the event hall, drinks will be served outside the hall.
5. Check-in opens at 4:00 PM, the event starts at 4:30. Please arrive early for the check-in.
