From 2020 November to 2021 March, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents BUTOH months, an online series consisting of Butoh-related workshops, screenings and articles.

Butoh is an avant-garde performance based art form originated in post-war Japan, which may be perceived as “radical”, or “shocking”. Throughout many years, Butoh has gradually become acknowledged worldwide but yet, remains a mystery to most Vietnamese people. Therefore, in this year 2020, as a tribute to the deceased Butoh predecessors, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam would like to introduce Butoh to Vietnamese people through online activities, hoping for a day that we can welcome Butoh dancers in person on our stage in Vietnam.

With BUTOH months series, it is our goal to introduce Butoh to all Vietnamese, regardless of their background, through 3 main activities, all free and easy to access:

♦ Workshop: Once per month events instructed by world-renowned Japanese Butoh dancers, targeting those with dance experience
♦ Screening: Extracts on Butoh and Pantomime with Vietnamese subtitles, inviting the viewers to explore the Butoh world from numerous angles
♦ Articles: Vietnamese translations of book extracts and interviews about famous Butoh pioneers, revealing various Butoh methodologies and principles

In addition, some Butoh-materials (book, DVD) are also available for free access in our library (DVDs are only available for free access from 13 Nov 2020 to 31 March 2021).
