THE ORIGIN OF JAPAN’S BUDŌ

On June 20, in Hanoi, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a lecture “Samurai in Medieval Japan – The Origin of Japan’s Budō” by Doctor Pham Hoang Hung as part of the mini lecture series “Close-up Japan”.

Inspired by “The Spirit of Budō – History of Japan’s Martial Arts” exhibition back in 2019, the lecture continues to discuss ancient Japan’s martial arts, with the focus on the samurai (Bushi) and their ideology (Bushidō), and its influence to modern Japan’s Budō. The lecture is hosted by Doctor Pham Hoang Hung, who majors in Oriental Studies, History.

“Close-up Japan” is a mini lecture series on different aspects of Japan, aiming to provide a more intellectual approach to Japanese culture and society for Vietnamese audiences, featuring highly-reputed Vietnamese researchers and specialists.

In addition to the lecture, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam would also like to introduce a demonstration by Mr. Le Hai Son, President of the Thang Long Kendo Club.

■ Lecturer Profile

Doctor Pham Hoang Hung has been working as a lecturer at Department of Japanese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi since 2003. In 2008, under JENESYS Program, he became a researcher at Senshu University. In October 2013, Hakuho Foundation sponsored him to be a visiting scholar at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. With a Bachelor Degree in Oriental Studies, Master Degree in Asian Studies, Doctor Degree in History, and a background of practicing Japanese Swordsmanship – Kendo and Iaido, his researches mainly focuses on Japanese medieval time. Regarding to the warrior class in medieval time, he has published some works such as “Warrior class in Japanese medieval time and awareness of inheritance” (Bulletin of 40th anniversary of Vietnam – Japan diplomatic relations commemorative international conference “History, Culture and Diplomacy: The vitality of Vietnam – Japan relationship in the area and the world”, VNU Hanoi, 2014), “The formation of Japanese warrior class and its characteristics in the Medieval time” (Cultural-Social History of Japan, The Gioi Publisher, 2010), “Zen and Zen elements in Japanese traditional sword” (Bulletin of Scientific Conference “Japan in the East Asia and Southeast Asia World”, VNU HCMC, 2003) etc.
