Lecturer: Doctor Dang Thi Viet Phuong – Institute of Sociology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences
On March 28, in Hanoi, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a lecture on “Social Participation of Japanese Elderly Citizens and Some Policy Implications for Vietnam” by Doctor Dang Thi Viet Phuong, from the Institute of Sociology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. This lecture is a part of the mini lecture series “Close-up Japan”.
Japan has the highest proportion of elderly citizens in the world. The population aging process in Japan began in early 1990s as a result of the post-war baby-boom. Vietnam officially entered the population aging period in 2017, but the aging rate of Vietnam is currently among the fastest countries in the world. Lessons and experiences of population aging and of the aged population in Japan can be good lessons for Vietnam in the very near future.
This lecture provides participants with a closer look at one aspect of Japanese aged society: the social participation of Japanese elderly citizens. The lecture gave participants brief information on population and aging in Japan. Policy recommendations for the elderly in Vietnam based on Japanese experiences can be helpful for Vietnamese policy makers, agencies and organizations working for the elderly, and possibly be research ideas for students and researchers who are interested in this topic.
