EXHIBITION GEOMETRIC ORIGAMI
by Professor MITANI JUN
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents Exhibition “GEOMETRIC ORIGAMI” by Professor MITANI JUN, University of Tsukuba on 16 – 20 of December and hold his workshop on 21 of December in Hanoi.
Professor Mitani’s research includes computational origami design, or simply, origami designing with computer software. The spherical and 3D origami is a new-concept-origami, involving three dimensionality and even curved surfaces. This innovative origami is made possible by computing the completed form and the folding process with a software, leaping afar from the conventional origami process. It requires a unique method called “curved folding”, so it may be difficult to apply at first, but once successful, it produces a magical three dimensional shape that makes you wonder how it can be made by one sheet of paper.
■ Profile
Dr. Mitani completed a doctoral program in engineering at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering in 2004. He joined RIKEN as a researcher in 2005 and became a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, University of Tsukuba, in 2006, where he has been serving as a professor from 2015 until now. From 2006 to 2009, he was a PRESTO researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency studying origami paper folding, including its design technique using computers. He has loved making paper crafts and using computers since his childhood, which has led to his present study subject. He also serves as a councilor of the Japan Origami Academic Society. He has authored “3D Origami Art” and “Curved Origami Design” published by CRC Press.
We hope through this exhibition, visitors will approach to a new invention folding method of Origami, a well-known paper folding art of Japanese culture.
